There are few trends more powerful than those that have weight of demographics behind them. The biggest of them all, in Western economies, is the rapid ageing of the population. And, as the constant hand-wringing over pensions demonstrates, this is widely viewed as a problem for all of us – the burden of supporting the elderly will fall on a smaller percentage of those of working age.
But the ageing population brings with it investment opportunities too. Between now and 2051 statistics show that those over 65, 75 and 85 years old increase by 55 percent, 81 percent and 143 percent respectively. Therefore as the population ages there is pressure from all sides to facilitate the elderly.
